Firework Restrictions
Message from the Mayor:..
The fire season is upon us. In the past few weeks, there have been a number of brush and structural fires in the area, including one that severely damaged two homes in Toquerville. Firefighters are currently fighting one of the largest fires in Arizona's history.
The Virgin River drainage was blessed with a lot of rain and snow this past winter, resulting in an abundance of vegetation this spring-including weeds and grasses that are excellent fuel for brush fires.
As the weather has warmed up and conditions have begun to dry out, this potential fuel source has been ripening for what could be a significant fire season.
Meanwhile, during this past legislative session, our State Legislature expanded the fireworks season and the types and potency of fireworks that are legal in this State.
Current fire conditions and an extended fireworks season could be a bad combination!
The City has updated its fireworks ordinance to reflect the changes made in State law, and, due to current conditions, has adopted a resolution declaring a Stage Two Restriction in the City. A copy of both the ordinance and resolution can be accessed at this website or at the City Offices.
Within the next month, we will be celebrating the Fourth of July and Pioneer Day. Until further notice, legal fireworks may be discharged within the City limits between June 26th and July 26th, and in only the following locations: (a) on any City public street located more than 100 feet from a hillside surrounding the inhabited portion of the City; and (b) at Wanlass Park and Vintage Park on July 4, and July 22nd and 23rd, and July 25th and 26th.
Please be wise in your use of fireworks - to avoid igniting any fires that might cause injury or damage; do not discharge fireworks of any kind from moving vehicles, on hillsides, or near dry vegetation; never use illegal fireworks; and always think SAFETY. And be aware that park curfews and noise ordinances remain in effect, and that fireworks may not be discharged after 10:00 p.m.-except on July 4th and 24th, when they may be discharged until 11:00 p.m.
Contact the City if you have questions about the appropriate use of fireworks; and watch our website and public notices (or call the City) before using fireworks, to be advised if restrictions in their use have been adjusted by the City Council as a result of changing conditions.
Watch for homes, trees, traffic, and people - so that your actions do not negatively impact another's safety and enjoyment of our time-honored celebrations. And have a great summer!
Karl Wilson, Mayor
